Builders in the United States commonly use light wood framing made from softwood trees (pine, spruce, and fir) sawn and machine-planed to standard sizes. Before pouring the concrete, builders dry-stack the interlocking units, like Lego bricks. After the concrete cures, the outer and inner polystyrene ICF panels produce a permanent exterior framework. In the building process, these panels allow the installation of plumbing and electrical conduits. Best of all, holes for plumbing and ductwork can be cut through the web (at specified sizes and intervals) without compromising structural integrity. Erecting a wall is fairly easy, but even small walls are best erected by at least two people. Simply slide the wall close to the edge at its location and tilt it up. I like to use temporary 2-by-4 stop blocks fastened to the outside edges of the joists and headers to keep the wall from sliding off as you lift it up. If installing the wall on a concrete slab, slide it up to the anchor bolts, then you will have to lift the wall up and position it down on the anchor bolts. Headers over doors and windows may be 2 x 6’s with cripple studs above them or full width 2 x1 0’s. Regardless, 3/8-inch plywood spacers are used to create a header width to match the stud width.

Timber framing, which involves fitting together large posts and beams and connecting them with wooden pegs, was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. In timber framing, builders work with natural logs and trees, rather than lumber pre-cut to common dimensions (like 2x4s).
If you opt for the first method, you’ll have to cut the ends of each rafter piece at a precise angle—which will depend on your blueprints—to give your roof its pitch. You’ll probably also need to hire a crane operator to come out and hold the heavy ridge board in place while you install your rafters. With your bracing in place, use your carpenter’s square and level to make sure the panel is sitting at a perfect right angle, then nail the edges of it into your subfloor. Once the edges are secure, hammer several more nails into the piece at various points to reinforce it.

Carpenters cut the rim joists to length and mark the location of the joists on them. Then the joists are cut to length, aligned with the marks on the rim joists and nailed through the rim joists into the ends of the joists. Along with the foundation, posts and beams are the backbone of a house frame. Together they are used to provide support for the framing in areas where a wall would be in the way. The size of posts and beams is determined by how much weight they have to support and calculated by an architect or engineer.

For example, there needs to be header material installed over all windows in a wall.
Repeat this process for every door and window your blueprints call for. With that done, you’ve framed the walls for the entire first floor of your home. You can now remove the temporary bracing you installed earlier, though you can also leave it up until you begin sheathing the frame.

A stool (also called a sill or saddle) is a horizontal member at the bottom of a window opening that fits between the jacks. Short framing members that fit under the stool or above the header are called cripple studs. Local building codes may require extra framing members around openings to stiffen them against high winds, as shown in the left photo below. After making sure all corners are plumb, fasten the end wall end studs to the side-wall end studs. Structural insulated panels are prefabricated panels made from rigid boards and come fitted with foam insulation. They make construction on-site much easier, as the actual frame doesn’t need to be assembled from scratch. Steel framing is more rigid than wood framing, so it doesn’t have the same issues with settling. Steel also isn’t prone to rotting or mold growth, making it a more desirable material in terms of durability and longevity.
